The Essentials Of Grass-Fed Beef Farms
by Imelda Reid
When buying meat, many people are always unaware of the nutritional and quality differences among the various provisions. In fact, the only distinction from one type of meat to the other is simply that of being beef, mutton, and bacon among other such categories. However, the way the animal was raised has a profound effect on the nutritional value and quality. Meat from grass-fed beef farms are more nutritious and high quality. This is, perhaps, the sole reason behind their high prices.
Firstly, the composition of fat and calories is quite lower in grass fed animal meat. Making a comparison between a feedlot animal meat and pasture fed animal meat reveals that, the grass-fed animal meat poses around two thirds less fat than the corresponding meat from the grain fed animal. This translates to low amounts of calories that make the meat healthy and called for.
The other important aspect of grass-fed animal beef is the presence of extra omega3s. When compared to the meat from feedlot livestock, the meat has far more omega3s. The difference is about two to four times more. The omega3s are essential fatty acids that are particularly important in every cell of your system and body. They are heart very friendly among all other fats. In addition, having an ample supply of fatty acids in your diet goes a long way in reducing your chances of experiencing heart attacks, schizophrenia, depression and hyperactivity.
In addition, products resulting from grass-fed ruminants are the richest in yet another type of good fat by the name conjugated linoleic acid. The so-raised ruminants have about three to four times as much CLA as the ones raised on the conventional diet. The conjugated linoleic acid is vital in defensing against cancer.
The level of vitamin E in such products is exceptionally high. It is reported that, meat obtained from animals feeding entirely on pasture has about four times the amount of vitamin E present in meat from feedlot counterparts. In fact, comparing the pasture fed animal with that from feedlot and vitamin E supplements is quite interesting. The beef from pasture depended cattle has twice as much vitamin E as there is in the meat from grain-fed cattle and having vitamin E supplements.
The grass-depended farming is also friendly and health to the animals. Due to the natural way of raising the animals, they are not subjected to stress and abuse, as it is the case with the feedlot farming. As such, the cattle remain health and free from diseases. These can be evidenced from the high appetite and their level of activeness.
The firms are also mindful of the environment. With the method, the cattle are well distributed and have no significant impact on the environment. Nevertheless, the commercial farms concentrate the cattle in a small place that requires collecting and transporting the waste for disposal. This ultimately amounts to the pollution of rivers, streams and the ground. The energy, such as diesel and gasoline, used to power the equipment in commercial farms aggravates the pollution.
Simply put, the traditional method of livestock rearing is still the most relevant today. Despite the low rate of growth and the high cost involved, be sure to obtain quality and healthy products.
