Reasons To Run A Grass Fed Beef Farm
by Katrina Wheeler
There is one proven way a small cattle operation can compete with huge feedlot operations. Direct marketing from a grass fed beef farm can provide financial security for an entire family. By reducing costs of production and cutting out the middleman (actually the several entities between farmers and consumers), cattle farmers can make the money they need to survive.
To be successful, every entrepreneur needs to think outside the box that tradition built and to find a product that will rise above competitors. When small landowners found that competition from giant corporate farms was threatening their survival, they needed to find a way to change the way they did business. Some very smart people are farmers, and many of them are happy to share good ideas that have made them profitable.
If the product on offer is truly superior, the fact that it might be more expensive does not deter consumers. Many people are concerned about the quality of food produced on 'factory farms' or by 'mono-culture', and they want to patronize little local growers to get healthier meat, eggs, and produce. This is why Farmers' Markets are becoming more and more popular across the country.
Not everyone agrees that natural methods of farming are better for the environment, make for healthier food, and are more humane. However, a large part of the population does think this way, and they are willing to pay more for organic and local products. Science does tell us that conventional foods contain pesticide and herbicide residues that make them less than ideal.
Research has shown that cattle raised on lush pasture and never fed grain actually have essential fatty acids in their meat that feedlot steers do not have. One such nutrient, which is known by the initials CLA, helps the human body break down saturated fats found in red meat. Today, with the concerns over genetically-modified grains that are used for animal feed, people are even more interested in meat raised on pasture.
A farmer with pastureland can expend energy once devoted to the laborious and expensive growing of grain to improving his green fields. The cost of raising cattle on pasture is much less than that of raising them in confinement or finishing (fattening) them with grain. Since grasses and legumes like clover and alfalfa improve the soil rather than robbing it of nutrients as corn does, the fertility of the land is protected and chemical fertilizer use can be reduced or eliminated.
Feedlots are known to be unhealthy places for cattle. Many feel that the unnatural crowding of animals and the deprivation of their natural food (grass) is inhumane. It's a system that makes money for the owners, but the quality of the meat produced is adversely affected. Ranchers that produce a free-range and naturally-grown animal need to raise awareness of the superiority of their meat.
Of course, some grass fed beef farms have gone national. One Colorado family markets its meat to several national grocery chains. Many gourmet restaurants now feature this premium meat on the menu. And another thing to consider: if you have a farmer like this in your area, you might be able to buy direct, taking the meat from the farm straight to your freezer.
